Robert D. Downing

DOWNING-Robert D. (Bob) Downing, age 57 of Graniteville, S.C., loving husband of Annette Nidiffer Downing, and son of the late Robert B. and Marianna Murphy Downing entered into eternal rest on Sunday, March 13, 2011. In addition to his wife, he is survived by her family, Al, Margaret, Elena and Alvin Nidiffer. He was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Nina Nidiffer. He was born in Augusta, Ga., but lived most of his life in Graniteville, S.C. He attended Byrd Elementary and Leavelle-McCampbell High School, where he graduated at the top of his class of 1971. He earned a BS Degree in Biology from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C. He worked most of his career as an environmental chemist and investigator with the State of S. C. Dept. of Health and Environmental Control. He was committed to preserving and protecting the natural resources of the state of S. C. He was a talented musician and songwriter and enjoyed writing SF short stories. He was in several bands; the Henchman, Five lbs. Smile, Level 7 and Lou Jones. He was a loving husband, son and friend who will be missed very much; but not forgotten. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held in the Chapel of Napier Funeral Home at 4:00 PM on Saturday, March 19, 2011 with Rev. James L. Young officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until the hour of service. The interment will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, S. C.
