Mackie R. Snipes

Mr. Mackie R. Snipes, age 71, passed away at his residence July 11, 2012. He was born on August 31, 1940 in Aiken, SC. He was a life long resident of Aiken County. He was an alumnus of Aiken High School.

Mr. Snipes was preceded in death by his parents: Raymond F. Snipes and Mary Alice Davis Snipes.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lottie Herron Snipes.

Also surviving is their daughter, Joyce Snipes (Robert) Cato of Aiken, SC., their sons, Mackie Steven (Rose Ann) Snipes of Tullahoma, Tennessee, Michael Alan Snipes of Charleston, SC and Brian Clark Snipes of Aiken.

5 grandchildren: Amanda G. (Charlie) Hendrix, Nicole S. (Matt) Carduccii, Lauren S. (Michael) Harrington, Steven Marshall Snipes and Emily S. (Brett) McNeil. 5 great-grandchildren: Luke Price Carducci, Nicolas Daniel Carducci and David Tyler Carducci, Brianna and Savannah McNeill.

He is also survived by two brothers: Davis (Diane) Snipes, Edward (Judy) Snipes and many extended family members.

Mr. Snipes was raised until age two on Snipes Pond Rd. Afterwards, his parents moved the family to 198 Wrights Mill Rd. where he and his brothers grew up.

Mr. Snipes began his professional career with his father building houses in Beaufort, SC. He then was a surveyor for the SC Highway Department, until 1960 when Owens-Corning Fiberglas opened its plant. He was one of their first employees where he enjoyed his work and was well respected by his co-workers. He retired after 36 ½ years of service to Owens-Corning in 1996. Mr. Snipes was an avid farmer. After a full day’s work he farmed over 450 acres of soy beans, corn, hay and rye throughout his life. He loved the outdoors. Fishing brought him great joy.

Mr. Snipes continued to farm and was known for his garden, from which he generously fed many people. He will be long remembered by all who knew him through his nearly 72 years. He was a true Southern gentleman who always carried a handkerchief and a pocket knife.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Davis Snipes, Edward Snipes, Owen Herron, John Burts Herron, Heber Herron, Jack Lynes, Tarrel Clark, and Robert Cato.

Interment will be at Aiken Memorial Gardens on Hwy 19 N, after a private memorial service. Family and friends are invited to visit with the immediate family after the service at the graveside, which will be 4:00 PM on Saturday July 14.
